                                                  相遇是缘   缘聚歌乐

来自访问学者4班的学员以情景剧Monkey King & White Skeleton Monster为本次汇演拉开帷幕。演员们风趣幽默、惟妙惟肖地演绎了剧中角色。访问学者2班合唱的歌曲Sunrise, Sunset，深情满满，形式新颖，优美的歌声打动了每一位观众。访问学者5班学员带来的情景剧Propelled Technology: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow's Classroom,分三幕演绎了古代的一言堂教学、今天的多媒体教学、以及未来在火星上的学习情景。 演出穿越时空，让观众为教育的明天驻足思索。访学者3班学员以精彩的情景剧3 Lifetimes of English Learning,造型别致，演员们倾情投入，完美地诠释了“兴趣是最好的老师”。中石油川庆商务英语班呈现的歌舞剧Marry Me Happy，洋溢者青春的无限魅力，神采飞扬、将最美的真情画面完美呈现。访问学者1班的情景剧2 Fools,2 Tricksters,& 1Dead Hero，将全场观众带回战国时代，为权势而谋划的故事让人性的复杂多面一览无遗，演员表演幽默生动，专业的背景动画带来好莱坞大片的视觉效果。

蒋花教授为本次才艺秀点评，感谢学员们用真心和热情打造的英语视听盛宴，希望大家能够保持对英语学习的终身热情。Michael Dredge老师对本次演出的丰富题材表示赞赏： 探险、教育、爱、阴谋。每一个演出都如此用心用情，在娱乐中学习英语，每一位学员都获得了更美妙的人生体验。

让我们一起慢慢体味这句富有哲理之言：We are all standing on the shoulders of the giants, and hopefully we can all see far.

感恩能站在巨人的肩膀上！ 让我们放眼全球，走向更加迷人的远方！

The Serious Silliness and Importance of a Talent Show or…
…Being Yourself in a Second Language    

For the 22^ndtime since its inception, on the heels of my 4^thround as co-host, the biannual MOE Training Program’s English Talent Show has come and gone.Asked to offer up a scrap of writing by way of my thoughts on all that, my first thought was, as always, I got more thanks than I deserve for playing such a small part in it.After all, whatever gives back to you more than you put in is – a privilege and a gift – not work.

The bonfire of creative spirit that was our latest talent show was lit back in early March, and my part in it was a lot of fun from beginning to end.We met with class leaders to discuss the ‘rules’ which are pretty basic.Each class gets their portion of time onstage, and what they DO with that time is up to them – as long as they do it in English.

I always wonder if the whole thing sounds a bit silly and distracting to students at this first meeting.Most are serious university professors of serious things making serious commitments to study English for four months - seriously!With that in mind, I do my best song and dance hoping to chase off too much seriousness.

Itell them I think this talent show thing is just as important, and in that way – at least – just as serious as grammar and reading test practice!I have doubts about how convincing that song and dance is, but the class monitors attending the meeting nod and when it’s over, take that message back to their classmates.That must be when the magic happens, because what I do know for certain is nobody in attendance at show-time would deny I’m right when I say, “It was a thing of beauty.”    

They sang and danced, they wrote and performed plays – they held us all in the palms of their hands.They charmed us one minute and had us howling with laughter in the next, all according to their own designs and weeks of cooperative determination invested in bringing those designs to the stage.The next time you meet a mathematics professor, consider the probability that you are also in the presence of a brilliant actor and comedian – it’s higher than you think!    

         Full-time classroom language learning is a monumental undertaking that  can  lose sight of its real purpose – to be who you are – everything you are – in another language –outside the classroom.Beyond the textbooks, beyond the strictures of ‘perfect grammar’, beyond the alphabetized lists of vocabulary, beyond the final exams in hushed rooms where test-takers worry and sweat over whether their English is ‘good’ enoughyet– beyond all of that – is a human being with something human to share. Truly expanding the world of people they can share it with takes courage to do more than order breakfast in another language.

        Shared points of view, ideas, jokes, stories, and songs are the real stuff and the root of human community and connection.When you use a second language to create that kind of connection, you’re more than just alearner– you are yourself.That language starts to belong to you.You begin to be at home in it.    

       To our students past and present: thank you for the gift of being your uniquely talented selves – English speakers, every one.  In return for your great generosity, creativity, and courageousness of spirit, I leave these last words to Shakespeare who wrote; “…all the world’s a stage…”…!
