                              Why Global Competence Matters?

TodayI’d like to say something about this word “compete”.

Five million years ago, ancient apes were driven to the ground after losing the battle to colonize the tree, then they began to forage for food and struggle to survive, eventually they evolved into human beings.

Nearly 3,000 years ago, the state of Qin, struggling with disadvantages for a long time, chose to learn from failures and to be brave. It adopted an innovative mode to rebuild its national strength, which led to Shang Yang's reform. In the middle and late Warring States period, the eastern six states were crushed, and the Qin Dynasty was finally established.

However, when we use the word “compete”, in ordinary people's eyes, it is nothing more than fighting for, chasing after and even life and death. Most of innovations in development come from competitive disadvantages. Competitive disadvantage will evolve into survival pressure and then be promoted into momentum or motivation. And the ability that we learn in the whole process is competence.

The first industrial Revolution directly pulled Britain from the feudal society into the capitalism. Britain had climbed to the top of the world, becoming the first country to realize industrialization. That’s competence.

Stepping back in time, if someone told our parents or people in our parents’ age in the 1970s, you were going to live in a nation where is rich in material and spiritual prosperity. Can they believe it? Through reform and opening up, Chinese people have made tremendous changes and created miracles in this country with heroic efforts. That’s competence.

At this moment, brutal wars are bringing new sufferings to us. Invasion? Slaughter? Hegemony? I think misuse of competence would be the underlying reason. Misuse of competence for security. Misuse of competence for resources. Misuse of competence for controller and controlee.

We live on such a colorful, vibrant, cerulean planet, however it has suffered tremendously due to human weaknesses such as greed, violence, suspicion and jealousy. Now we need to tackle new problems: environmental pollution, poverty and social injustice, to name just a few. People who conduct these miseries totally forget the significance of  competence.

We want food. We want peace. We want knowledge. We might have disappointment, frustration, even fury, but always keep this in mind, the ultimate aim of competence is to shoulder  responsibilities to improve ourselves constantly and to create a better social realm, not hurting each other, not making others suffer.

I still and will forever remember the opening night of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The thought-provoking slogan “One world, one dream” and Sarah Brightman's singing “You and me, from one world, we are family”. How wonderful, touching and  harmonious that moment was. All athletes around the world compete with higher, faster and  stronger competence not only  for honour, but most impofrtantly for friendship, solidarity and mutual understanding.

We are the world, we are the children. It’s true that we’ll make a better world, just you and me. No more hatred, Let LOVE win!
